We need good theories about the ghost in the machine.?I think it is a major limitation of current trends in psychology that we have moved away from realizing this. Our conception scientific conceptions of matter and energy, as per physics, chemistry, etc do not give us any purchase on our subjective experieces such as smelling, hearing, seeing, reasoning, being afraid, being happy etc etc.?We will have to alter our current conceptions of the machine if we are to have any real progress towards a scientific understanding of consciousness.?The alteration in our conception of the machine will in some way amount to the introduction of the ghost. |
